WAM Arm Stand

Custom stand to mimic human torso for mounting Whole-Arm Manipulator (WAM) robots. Designed and built on a hard budget with limited access to tools. Personally fabricated and assembled all parts to stay within project requirements. Safety was a key concern. Stand must be stable to any kind of motion the arms could perform as well as any accidental bumps. Performed tipping calculations to optimize supports and counter weight. Must also be easily portable and able to fit through standard door frame.

Goals

  • Built in redundant safety to prevent catastrophic damage and ensure stand is robust, sturdy and secure

  • Portable - safely and easily move around for demonstrations and testing in different enviroments

  • Easily adjustable - Arm height is changed using an linear actuator and arms rotate on thrust bearings for easy angle adjustments
