On-Site Malaria Detection Device

I was brought onto this project to take the Phase I laboratory setup and transition the hardware into a portable, robust and field ready enclosure. Chromologic was developing a novel approach to fast, cheap and accurate malaria detection on-site. The proof of concept setup needed to be packaged so it could be tested on site in Malaria endemic areas. We also needed to significantly improve sensitivity, build a user-friendly language-agnostic device interface and reduce weight and power consumption. We achieved these goals and had a successful deployment.

Goals

  • Increase system sensitivity to achieve long-term targets

  • Move system from benchtop into portable enclosure

    • Sized for airline carryon

    • Lightweight

    • Robust to vibration, drops, temperature, humidity and dust intrusion

  • Create easy-to-use language agnostic device interface

  • Create DFM documentation for regulatory approval and production

  • Put together consumables and potential vendors
